About the event
Join coach Sidney with TCSD every Monday and Friday evening for an ocean swim at La Jolla Shores!
These workouts offer three levels of swims:
A Group (5:15pm)
The A group is for experienced swimmers who wish to swim from the shores to the cove and back (~2 miles total). Swimmers are encouraged to meet-up with other swimmers of comparable pace and leave in pods between 5:00-5:15pm. This is a self-paced swim with very few re-groups and is meant to be an uninterrupted, long distance workout.
B Group (5:30pm)
The B group is for swimmers who wish to swim to the half-mile buoy and back (~1 mile total) in a no-drop group. Swimmers of all paces are welcome and there will be multiple re-grouping points along the way. This group will be led by experienced swimmer and coach Sidney Russell, who will confirm you have the appropriate skills to complete this swim prior to leaving.
C Group (5:30pm)
The C group is for relatively new ocean water swimmers who wish to swim anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 miles parallel to the shore in a no-drop group. Typically referred to as the "in-shore" group, this group will be led by TCSD coaches Chip Slack, John Mitchell, and or Zana Kerr, whom will also want to confirm your experience, but will make sure the slowest swimmer is always accompanied.
*Please note exact swim distances will vary depending on group pace, proficiency, and swim conditions. These swims are open to all, however to ensure everyone's safety, swimmers MUST have basic open water swimming skills including the ability to swim through the surf and continue to swim 500 yds (C group) or 1000 yds (B group) uninterrupted and unassisted. Previous open water swimming experience (including ocean, bay, or lake) is highly recommended but not required.
DIRECTIONS
All groups will meet at La Jolla Shores on the beach near the south bathrooms. This is located where Vallecitos (road) meets the boardwalk near Kellogg Park. Parking is available at the La Jolla Shores Park parking lot just to the north or on any side street in the area. Please allow ample time for parking, especially during the summer months, as the beach can be very crowded.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Wetsuits, specifically during the cooler months, are advised and for those concerned about being cold, neoprene caps or booties are recommended. Please also bring or be willing to accept a bright colored swim cap to wear while swimming. First timers, PLEASE CHECK-IN with your workout leader to discuss your open water swimming skills, strength, and experience prior to leaving with the group!
